Title of Study: The Impact of Black-Oriented Reality Television Consumption: Is Black Programming Harming Black Women?
You are invited to participate in a research project titled “The Impact of Black-Oriented Reality Television Consumption: Is Black Programming Harming Black Women?” This consent form will explain the details of participating in this research project. Please read this form carefully. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the study.
What are we trying to find out in this study?
The purpose of the study is to learn more about the way reality television programming produced for Black audiences may impact Black female viewers. The goal is to better understand how often people watch certain TV shows, their beliefs about various groups of people, how they feel about themselves, and how they act within their social relationships. If you agree to take part, you will be asked to respond to 114 brief questions and statements. You will provide multiple-choice responses and ratings on numbered scales.
Who can participate in this study?
You must be 18 to 25 years old to participate in this study. You must also identify as a Black woman and have watched Black-oriented reality television shows (currently or in the past). You must be a resident of the United States.
Where will this study take place?
This study is an online survey.
What is the time commitment for participating in this study?
The survey takes 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
What will you be asked to do if you choose to participate in this study?
You will complete several online questionnaires.
What are the risks of participating in this study, and how will these risks be minimized?
There are minimal risks to you in this study. However, some questions may bring up strong feelings. You have the option to discontinue the study at any point. You may also contact the investigators to inquire about mental health resources in your area to help address any distress. You can also call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK for immediate help.
What are the benefits of participating in this study?
Participating in this study will help us better understand cultural influences affecting the mental health of Black women and may help therapists develop treatment approaches that improve therapy outcomes for Black women. This study also presents an opportunity for participants to take part in the effort to increase Black representation in mental health research. You may choose to enter a drawing for one of five $50 Amazon gift cards
Are there any costs associated with participating in this study?
There are no costs associated with participating in this study.
Is there any compensation for participating in this study?
You may choose to enter a drawing for one of five $50 Amazon gift cards after finishing all the study questionnaires.
How will my data be protected?
All information obtained is completely voluntary. Only the investigators have access to your responses and informed consents. This data will only be used to support the goals of this current project. Only summary data will be reported in any conference and/or paper. Your name will not be associated with your responses. All electronic information will be in a password protected database for seven years after completion. This database will be kept in a locked file cabinet.
For participants who choose to enter the drawing for an Amazon.com gift card, extra care will be taken to make sure this information is not linked to questionnaire responses. To do this, anyone who wants to enter the drawing will be taken to a second survey after completing the study forms to then provide their email address. These two databases will be never be linked together.
What if you want to stop participating in this study?
Your participation in this research is voluntary. You can leave the study without penalty.
